Gabe Asks: What are You Waiting For?

I told you about my friend Gabe in a recent post; how she was an important part of my formative years, how she has returned to my life years later, how she has touched so very many lives.

As I mentioned, my friend has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Gabe is, among other things, a poet. She has made a name for herself nationally in the “poetry slam” circuit. She has developed the persona of a saucy, spicy chick — complete with the occasional bunny ears and blowing Marilyn Monroe kisses.

Early last month, Gabe attended — and performed in — the Austin Poetry Slam. Her performance was captured on video, thanks to a video production effort that she herself had launched several years ago.

Do you have a few minutes to spend with my friend?

This clip is “Not Safe For Work”. The language is a little raw — actually, the whole thing is a little raw. I should be so strong under such circumstances:

With love,

  1. Okay, your friend just blew me away. Unbelievable. I am just so jealous that you know her and I don’t.

  2. The kids and I love poetry slams. We started going to them at LEAF. (Lake Eden Arts Festival…) They put attending one on their list of things to do this year.

Gabe is incredibly talented. She would have been a crowd favorite at LEAF for sure. You are blessed to have known her, my friend.

Thank you so much for sharing this.

  3. This is beautiful and harsh but so right. Wake Up!

  5. INRIS –
wow. this was awesome. I hope you don’t mind, I mentioned and reposted the vid (with links back to here) on my blog….
Thank you for sharing this… and Gabe…

  6. I just got to watch this clip today. So powerful. Thanks again for sharing.

@ Sam Starting Over….Gabe did not pass, she is still with us; she has terminal cancer.

  7. Holy shit.

I haven’t been able to watch that video until now because YouTube is blocked at work, and that’s where I do most of my blogging. But… I watched it now, and it’s incredible. I was expecting some mushy poetry that wouldn’t make sense to me or some fancy words jumbled together to make pretty sentences but what I got was a lot more moving. That was intense, honest, and beautiful. She’s right, too- what the fuck are we waiting for?

  8. […] it’s been clear how much our little family of bloggers has been touched by the story of ItNeverRainsInSeattle’s friend Gabe, and I too was really moved by her poem/challenge, What Are You Waiting For?. It’s one of […]
